Monsoon travel in India: where to go and what to pack

The monsoon is a season, not a reason to stay home. Here is where it shines and how to pack for it.

Why travel in the monsoon

From June to September much of India turns green. Waterfalls fill up, hill stations are wrapped in mist and the crowds of the peak season thin out. Many hotels lower their rates, and the places that are hot and dusty in May become soft and fresh. The trick is choosing destinations where rain adds to the experience rather than spoiling it.

Where it shines

  • Ladakh and Spiti sit in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, so July and August are prime months for clear skies, high passes and monasteries.
  • The Western Ghats, from Lonavala to Coorg, are at their most dramatic, with waterfalls, coffee estates and cool evenings.
  • Udaipur gains its lakes back and the city looks its best in the late monsoon, especially in August and September.
  • Meghalaya's living root bridges and waterfalls are spectacular, though some treks need a dry spell to be safe.

Coastal Goa and Kerala are quieter and very green, but the sea is rough, so plan these trips around food, culture and countryside rather than beach days.

Plan for flexibility

Rain can close mountain roads or delay trains and flights for a few hours. Build a buffer day into longer trips, avoid tight same-day connections and keep the first and last nights close to your arrival and departure points. Travel insurance that covers weather delays is worth the small extra cost in this season.

What to pack

Pack light, quick-drying clothes rather than heavy cotton, and bring one warm layer for hill stations. A compact umbrella and a lightweight rain jacket together handle most days. Waterproof sandals or trekking shoes with good grip matter more than you might expect on wet stone steps. Add a dry bag or zip-lock pouches for your phone and documents, a small towel, and insect repellent for the evenings.

Stay healthy

Drink bottled or filtered water, eat freshly cooked food and carry oral rehydration salts in case of an upset stomach. If you are heading to the hills, ask your trip designer about current road conditions a day before you leave.
