When to go

The backwaters are at their most comfortable from October to March, when the days are warm, the humidity drops and the evenings on deck are cool enough for a light layer. December and January are the busiest months, so plan early if you are traveling over the school holidays. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain and lower rates; the landscape is at its greenest, but long outdoor days are harder to plan.

How long to stay

One night on a houseboat is enough for most first-time visitors. You board around midday, cruise through the canals in the afternoon, moor before sunset and return the next morning. Pair it with two nights in Kochi for the old town, the spice markets and the evening dance performances, and two nights in the hills of Munnar for tea estates and cooler air. A week covers all three without rushing.

Choosing a houseboat

Houseboats range from simple one-bedroom boats to large vessels with several cabins and an upper deck. A few questions help you choose:

  • How many bedrooms do you need, and are they air-conditioned at night only or all day?
  • Is the boat private, or will you share the deck with other guests?
  • Are all meals included, and can the cook adapt them for children or dietary needs?
  • Which route does the boat take, and how much of the day is spent cruising?

Private boats suit families and couples who want quiet. Shared boats work well for solo travelers on a budget.

What to expect on board

Life on a houseboat is slow by design. The crew cooks fresh Kerala meals, often with fish bought from the canal banks, and the afternoon passes watching village life drift by: children walking to school, ducks being herded along the water, and paddy fields that sit below the level of the canal. Evenings are quiet, with little light pollution and the sound of the water.

Practical tips

Carry insect repellent, a light rain jacket and comfortable sandals. Mobile coverage is patchy in places, so download maps and music before you board. Keep a little cash for the boatmen and for small purchases at village stops, and ask your trip designer to time the transfer from Kochi so you board before lunch.
